Modern 60’s Look

“Once you get rid of the idea that you must please other people before you please yourself, and begin to follow your instincts—only then can you be successful” - Raquel Welch

MAKEUP by Elizabeth Ulloa

In honor of celebrating one of my favorite beauty icons of all time, Mrs. Raquel Welch's life, I want to share my take on her iconic "winged 60’s eyeliner.” In 1966, Bolivian-American beauty Raquel Welch donned a fur bikini, go-go boots, and dramatic winged eyeliner for her role in One Million Years B.C. A publicity still for the film, featuring Welch standing over the rocks of a prehistoric wasteland, became one of the best-selling pin-up posters of the sixties. Along with Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch helped establish the winged eyeliner as a classic symbol of glamour and sophistication.

This is a “Baby Raquel Welch” look because it’s a dialed-back approach to Raquel’s opulent eye makeup. While swooping, dramatic cat eyes can be great for a night out dancing, a minimal winged eyeliner works better for everyday wear. An understated wing can add the right touch of glamour, and this look is surprisingly easy to achieve once you get the hang of it.

HOW TO modern 60’s LOOK

1. Apply a light beige shimmer eyeshadow to the eyelid, browbone, and inner corner with a medium-sized makeup brush to give radiance.

2. Look down and pull your eyelid skin taut. Start applying liquid eyeliner between the lashes on the top eyelid. Line the lash line from the inner corner to the outer corner. Close the eye and pull the lid toward the ear to tighten the skin. Repeat the base step and line the upper lash line above the lashes. Repeating the line intensifies the color, becoming thinner toward the inner corner. Make the outer corner thicker for a sexy kitty flick.

3. Apply the same light beige shimmer eyeshadow to the lower lash line using a small brush.

4. Curl eyelashes and apply black mascara.

5. Apply a light, shimmering pink lipstick or gloss to the lips, and voilà, a super clean 1960s modern look.
